Large painting of Dolly Parton on wall
still working 9 to 5?

Anyone who read this title and didn't hear Dolly Parton.....

Workin' nine to five, what a way to make a livin'

Barely gettin' by, its all takin' and no givin''

They just use your mind and they never give you credit ......

and now you wont be able to get the song out of your head.... sorry.

Now .... having a great work ethic is a pre-requisite for success in whatever you do. Whatever attributes you might possess they are all diminished without sheer hard work and dedication.

Generation Z might baulk at the idea of working 9 to 5 - with no flexibility and no nod to work/life balance. I get it. But whatever the hour, the quantum of hard work will dictate your success; be it time based payment, dedication to perfecting technique, preparing crazily for that critical sales pitch or... just getting shit done! A good work ethic will stand you in good stead. In fact it's vital for most things.

Whilst hard skills can be taught, softer more inherent skills are the most sought-after. A good work ethic being one of those - more so in todays world of remote work and empowerment.

A strong work ethic involves consistent effort over time - reliably getting things done - a consistent application of effort and the application of professional behaviours. A willingness to put in the hard miles to achieve goals - be they task oriented, personal or career developmental.

The reward for a strong work ethic is being very employable, promotable, and trusted; with personal and career development, a sense of satisfaction and higher salaries. It's a transferable skill between businesses and between personal and professional lives.

There is no place for flakiness, excuses or wavering dedication in great work ethic. Individuals with a great work ethic honour their commitments and tend to routinely go above and beyond what is expected of them. Even when no one is watching.

A strong work ethic doesn't mean that you work yourself to a standstill, over commit or become anxious or stressed. It doesn't mean that there is no balance in your life. It does mean that you can apply yourself.

Something to work on maybe?
